Michael B. Jordan is taking on not one but two roles in Sinners, Ryan Coogler’s latest film, set to hit theaters on April 18. Warner Bros. unveiled the official trailer on January 28, offering a first look at the gripping supernatural drama where Jordan plays twin brothers who return to their hometown — only to uncover an even greater evil lurking in the shadows.
The film features a stellar ensemble cast, including Hailee Steinfeld, Delroy Lindo, Wunmi Mosaku, Omar Miller, Jayme Lawson, and Jack O'Connell. Sinners also marks Coogler’s first directorial project since Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and the latest collaboration between him and Jordan, following Fruitvale Station, Creed, and Black Panther.
A Filmmaking Partnership Built on Trust
During a virtual press conference on January 27, Coogler reflected on his long-standing partnership with Jordan, comparing their dynamic to legendary director-actor duos like Martin Scorsese with Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio.
"All of my favorite filmmakers have those relationships, and it makes it easier, man. It's hard to make a movie, bro," Coogler said. "It's hard to lead a film, to be an actor in these films, and when you have somebody who it clicks with, somebody who understands you, it doesn't feel like work all the time. And then, what we went through with losing Chadwick, man, it made us both, I think, appreciate each other even more."
Personal and Literary Inspirations
Coogler revealed that Sinners is partially inspired by his own family history in Mississippi. He recalled how his uncle’s deep connection to blues music and his Southern roots influenced the film’s themes.
"The seed of it started with that relationship with my uncle. He would listen to blues music all the time. He would only talk about Mississippi when he was listening to that music," Coogler shared. "He had a profound effect on my life, and I got a chance to kind of dig into my own ancestral history with this film. It's been extremely rewarding."
Beyond personal influences, Coogler cited Stephen King’s 1975 horror novel Salem’s Lot and The Twilight Zone episode 'The Last Rites of Jeff Myrtlebank' as key inspirations.
With its mix of supernatural horror and personal storytelling, Sinners promises to be a haunting and emotional thriller. The film arrives in theaters on April 18.
