Meryl Streep’s Daring Escape: Cutting Through Fences to Flee LA Wildfires

The Oscar-winning actress used quick thinking to escape the flames.
In early January 2025, devastating wildfires tore through Los Angeles, forcing thousands to evacuate, including legendary actress Meryl Streep. The 75-year-old found herself in a dangerous situation as flames encroached upon her Pasadena home.
On January 8, as evacuation orders were issued, Streep attempted to flee her property but discovered that a massive fallen tree had blocked her driveway, cutting off her main route. Thick smoke and approaching flames left little time for hesitation. Demonstrating remarkable resourcefulness, she rushed to a neighbor’s house, borrowed wire cutters, and cut a hole through her fence, creating an escape route. She then drove through the opening, crossing into her neighbor’s yard and finally making her way to safety.

This dramatic escape was detailed by her nephew, journalist Abe Streep, in a New York Magazine article. He praised his aunt’s ability to stay composed under pressure and take decisive action in a life-threatening situation. Reports indicate that Streep’s Pasadena home, though dangerously close to the Eaton Fire, was not destroyed.
The Los Angeles wildfires have had a devastating impact, claiming lives, destroying properties, and forcing high-profile residents to evacuate. Streep’s escape serves as a reminder of both the unpredictability of such disasters and the necessity of quick decision-making in critical moments.
