Left Behind by the MCU? While Old and New Heroes Return in 'Doomsday', One Avenger No Longer at the Party

The actor reflects on stepping away from the franchise.

Chris Evans may have hung up the shield, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t feeling a pang of nostalgia as Marvel’s cinematic juggernaut rolls on without him. Speaking to ScreenRant, the actor admitted it’s "sad" not to be part of the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, even as many of his former co-stars suit up once more — some in very unexpected ways.

"Yeah, I talk to them all the time," Evans said when asked about keeping in touch with his Marvel colleagues. "It’s where Pedro [Pascal] is right now. I mean, it’s sad to be away. It’s sad to not be back with the band, but I’m sure they’re doing something incredible… and I’m sure it’s going to be that much harder when it comes out, and you feel like you weren’t invited to the party."

Evans’ Captain America famously took his final bow in Avengers: Endgame, choosing love and a life in the past over continued heroics in the present. Since then, the mantle has passed to Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson — who will return in Doomsday alongside a star-studded line-up that includes Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man, Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, and Letitia Wright’s Shuri. Perhaps most eyebrow-raising of all: Robert Downey Jr. is back too — not as Iron Man, but as Doctor Doom.

Avengers: Endgame

As Avengers: Doomsday barrels toward its new release date in December 2026, Evans seems content with his exit — but not immune to the bittersweet feeling of watching the party continue without him. After all, for a decade, he wasn’t just at the party — he helped host it.
