Keanu Reeves is making one thing clear — he doesn’t believe a John Wick 5 will happen. After the dramatic ending of John Wick: Chapter 4, where the legendary assassin seemingly met his demise, fans have been clamoring for another sequel. But according to Reeves, that’s not in the cards.
"You know, the character's dead. He died in John Wick: Chapter 4," Reeves stated plainly when asked about a potential fifth film. "I know, in Hollywood you can [revive dead characters]. I know, I know, it's the Hollywood story. Right now, there aren’t [any plans]."
A Franchise That Refuses to Die
Despite Reeves’ insistence, Hollywood may have other ideas. John Wick: Chapter 4 was a massive success, earning nearly $200 million domestically and close to half a billion worldwide. In an era where mid-budget action franchises rarely hit those numbers, it’s no surprise that studio executives are eager to keep the series going.
Director Chad Stahelski initially backed up Reeves’ sentiment, saying after the release of Chapter 4 that there would need to be a 'real reason' to bring Wick back. He even admitted he "would feel ripped off" as a viewer if they made another sequel without justification. But just a month later, Lionsgate’s President, Joe Drake, confirmed that a fifth John Wick film was already in development.
From One Sequel to Five More?
By October 2023, even Stahelski had shifted gears, revealing that he had ideas for not just one more John Wick film — but for five more sequels. That’s right — he has concepts mapped out for John Wick: Chapter 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. Then, in November 2023, Lionsgate made it official: the script for John Wick: Chapter 5 was being written. The studio wasted no time, jumping straight into development as soon as the WGA strike ended.
The Inevitable Return?
The John Wick franchise has already stretched the limits of believability, with the titular assassin surviving countless life-threatening injuries and taking out an astonishing 439 enemies throughout the series. Given that history, would it really be that shocking if Hollywood found a way to bring him back again?
Reeves may insist that John Wick 5 isn’t happening, but in an industry driven by box office success and franchise potential, money often speaks louder than words.
