Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a special collector’s edition that includes over two hours of bonus content. In a new clip from this anniversary release, Nolan, 54, and his wife and producing partner Emma Thomas, 52, reflect on the film and its place in Nolan’s career.
A Different Emotional Tone
'The Dark Knight trilogy cast a very long shadow on Chris’s career,' says Thomas, who has produced all 12 of Nolan’s films since the two married in 1997. ' For me, Interstellar is a much more openly emotional film than his previous work. Because it’s so personal, I think people didn’t quite know how to process it when it was first released.'
Interstellar premiered in 2014, two years after the final chapter of Nolan’s Batman series, The Dark Knight Rises.

The Genesis of the Film
The idea for Interstellar came after Steven Spielberg stepped away from directing a script written by Nolan’s brother and frequent collaborator, Jonathan Nolan. The brothers merged two original story ideas to create the final screenplay, which explores themes of love, sacrifice, and humanity’s drive to explore the unknown.
In a new featurette titled 'The Future Is Now: A Look Back,' Nolan reflects on the timing of the project: ' If you ask me, ‘Why was the time right to make Interstellar?’ I don’t know if it was. It was right for me. The film did well upon release, but I don’t know if it captured the zeitgeist the way some of my other films have.'
A Story of Exploration and Sacrifice
The film stars Matthew McConaughey as Cooper, a former NASA test pilot-turned-farmer living on a near-future Earth ravaged by global famine in the 2060s. Cooper discovers NASA is still secretly operating and working to find a new home for humanity. Leaving his children (played by Mackenzie Foy and Timothée Chalamet) behind, Cooper joins a space mission led by scientist Amelia Brand (Anne Hathaway) to locate habitable planets.
'We felt like we were swimming upstream a bit with Interstellar,' says Nolan in the video. 'My brother, myself, and everyone involved wanted to make a case for humanity’s need to explore. It was a time when that drive seemed to be fading.'
As the narrative unfolds over decades, Cooper ventures deeper into space while his children grow older, played by Jessica Chastain and Casey Affleck as adults. The cast also includes Matt Damon, John Lithgow, Michael Caine, and Topher Grace in pivotal roles.
