Jake Schreier isn’t stepping away from the Marvel machine just yet. Fresh off directing the upcoming Thunderbolts, Schreier has now been tapped to helm the long-anticipated X-Men reboot — marking Marvel’s first proper return to the mutant saga since acquiring 20th Century Fox in 2019.
According to Deadline, Schreier emerged as the studio’s top choice after a pivotal meeting last week, solidifying his place as a trusted in-house voice for the next phase of superhero storytelling.
The screenplay is being written by Michael Lesslie, whose recent work includes The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and Assassin’s Creed. While little is known about plot or tone, sources say Schreier’s deep affinity for the X-Men comics helped secure his pitch — a vision reportedly in line with Marvel’s efforts to both modernise and honour the legacy of the beloved franchise.

Though no official casting has been announced, the rumour mill is already churning. Names like Harris Dickinson (for Cyclops), Sadie Sink (Jean Grey), Julia Butters (Kitty Pryde), and Margaret Qualley (Rogue) are being floated, adding further intrigue to what’s expected to be one of Marvel’s marquee releases in years. Industry watchers have pointed to two untitled Marvel slots in 2027 as possible launchpads for the new X-Men era.
