After conjuring horror magic with Talk to Me and stirring anticipation for Bring Her Back, Australian directors Danny and Michael Philippou — better known online as RackaRacka — are stepping away from the arthouse (briefly) and back into the chaos that first made them internet legends.
Their latest project is a documentary about underground deathmatch wrestling. Not content with simply filming from the sidelines, the brothers got in the ring themselves — quite literally.
Speaking to DiscussingFilm, they described the project as "extreme performance art with glass, barbed wire, thumbtacks." The film, still untitled, was shot between their two horror features and is expected to premiere early next year. And this isn’t some stylised simulation of violence — both Danny and Michael trained and competed in matches for the doc.
The filmmaking approach is as raw as the subject matter. With cameras planted inside the ring, the documentary promises an up-close look at real injuries, real adrenaline, and real consequences. It’s a natural, if jarring, evolution of the Philippous’ early YouTube work — frenzied, dangerous, and deeply personal. Fans who’ve followed them from homemade chaos to A24 acclaim may find this project both familiar and shocking.
