Exciting News for ‘Godzilla Minus One’ Fans: Direct Sequel in the Works

Still from the film 'Godzilla Minus One’

Takashi Yamazaki, known for his work as a visual effects supervisor, has made a name for himself in Japan with his effects-driven blockbusters and has received numerous Japanese Oscars.

It has been confirmed that Takashi Yamazaki will direct the next installment in the Godzilla franchise for Toho, and this upcoming film will serve as a direct sequel to Minus One. While specific plot details and a title have yet to be revealed, the film is set to take place in Japan, with production potentially starting in late 2025.

Godzilla Minus One was a remarkable success upon its release in late 2023, grossing 55million domestically and over 115 million worldwide, all while being produced on a modest budget of just $15 million. The film's impressive visuals were achieved through a blend of practical effects and CGI, showcasing the talent of the Japanese VFX industry — a lesson Hollywood could certainly learn from.

His previous work includes The Eternal Zero (2013), which highlights his expertise in creating compelling cinematic experiences.

Set against the backdrop of post-war Japan, Godzilla Minus One features the monster wreaking havoc, culminating in an intense final seaside sequence that left audiences on the edge of their seats. This film marks the second entry in the live-action Reiwa era of Godzilla films, following 2016’s Shin Godzilla.

As the 37th film in the franchise and Toho's 33rd Godzilla movie, Minus One has garnered significant acclaim. Filmmakers like Guillermo del Toro have praised it as one of the "Top 3 Godzilla films of all time," calling it a cinematic miracle. Other notable directors such as Steven Spielberg and Christopher Nolan have also expressed their admiration for this thrilling addition to the iconic series. With such high praise and a sequel on the horizon, fans have much to look forward to!
