Devoid of Morality and Fear: 5 of Hollywood’s Most Controversial Characters That Fans Both Love and Hate

Stills from the film 'Watchmen', 'Fight Club'

Their actions leave audiences divided.

In most films, the protagonist is a noble and virtuous character, always making the right choices and thinking of others. However, audiences have grown tired of watching flawless heroes with unshakable moral values. It’s far more intriguing to follow those who blur the line between good and evil.

Michael Corleone – The Godfather

Played by the legendary Al Pacino, Michael Corleone is the youngest son of Don Corleone, the founder of a powerful criminal empire. Initially, Michael is an honorable and compassionate man, but the brutal world of organized crime transforms him into a ruthless mafia boss.

Michael Corleone – The Godfather

Undergoing a dramatic personal evolution, Michael becomes someone who will stop at nothing to ensure his family’s dominance. He is even willing to eliminate his own relatives, believing that the end always justifies the means.

Travis Bickle – Taxi Driver

In Martin Scorsese’s psychological drama, Robert De Niro portrays a Vietnam War veteran who gradually descends into madness.

Travis Bickle feels suffocated and alienated in the vast and merciless city of New York. He wavers between a desire to take revenge on those in power and a mission to save a 12-year-old girl trapped in a bleak world. Many critics have noted that Arthur Fleck, the central character in Joker, was heavily inspired by the lost and sociopathic Bickle.

It’s no surprise that De Niro received an Academy Award nomination for this role.

Tyler Durden – Fight Club

This raw and provocative adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk’s novel turned Brad Pitt into an undeniable sex symbol. However, beneath his sculpted physique and charismatic smirk, Tyler Durden hides a chaotic blend of contradictions and a deep hatred for the system.

Durden despises capitalist society. A nihilist at heart, he rejects all rules and lives life entirely on his own terms. Yet, despite his anarchistic and often destructive ideology, audiences couldn’t help but admire him — perhaps because everyone has a little bit of Tyler Durden inside them.

Jack Sparrow – Pirates of the Caribbean

A childhood favorite, yet far from a role model, Captain Jack Sparrow is a selfish opportunist through and through. Aside from himself, his only true loves are rum and gold. He lies with ease and disregards morality whenever it suits him.

However, Johnny Depp’s iconic portrayal adds layers to the character, revealing that Sparrow is not as terrible as he seems. He has helped his friends more than once and occasionally — even if rarely — demonstrates the qualities of a true gentleman. After all, it was Jack who saved Elizabeth Swann, the governor’s daughter, from certain death. Without his unexpected act of bravery, audiences would have missed out on Keira Knightley’s unforgettable performance.

Rorschach – Watchmen

The film adaptation of Alan Moore’s graphic novel redefined the superhero genre by exposing the dark side of costumed vigilantes. Jackie Earle Haley delivered a chilling performance as Rorschach, a relentless crimefighter and street philosopher.

Rorschach – Watchmen

With an unyielding sense of justice and an uncompromising worldview, Rorschach refuses to bend to society’s moral ambiguity. He conceals his emotional scars beneath a tattered trench coat and a disturbing mask of ever-shifting inkblots, embodying the harsh reality of a world that refuses to play fair.
