Despite the critical acclaim, Minecraft: The Movie has become an unexpected cultural phenomenon. At screenings in the US, especially in IMAX, something special happens: audiences, mostly children and teenagers, don’t just watch the film, they scream and clap wildly.
Not a film, more like a rock concert
Applause, shouting lines, and wild reactions make going to see Minecraft: The Movie feels like going to see a punk-rock show or a football match. If you want to enjoy the action in peace, be prepared for someone to start shouting Steve’s name. TikTok videos with titles like 'Top 10 Moments from the Audience' and 'How to Scream While Watching Minecraft Correctly' are racking up millions of views.
The police come to the screenings
This format of watching the film already leads to scandals; in some cinemas, employees have to be in the hall and shut up screaming teenagers. Once, the police were even called, because the children were behaving inappropriately and could not calm down.
At the same time, the audience is delighted. On Reddit, many write that this was their most memorable trip to the cinema in their entire lives. And although the plot did not delight professional reviewers, the film, it seems, was a hit with the main target audience of Minecraft and they applaud the film sincerely. The film has already collected 300 million, which means that the game adaptation may be commercially successful. And then there will be sequels, generating new viral trends
