Crime, Deception, and a Small-Town Heist: 'Dope Thief' Promises High-Stakes Thrills

Still from the series 'Dope Thief' (2025)

Apple TV+'s upcoming crime drama explores a botched heist with deadly consequences.

What happens when a small-time scam spirals into something far more dangerous? That’s the premise of Dope Thief (formerly Sinking Spring), an upcoming crime thriller from Apple TV+. Premiering March 14, 2025, the eight-episode series is based on Dennis Tafoya’s novel Dope Thief and follows two childhood friends who pose as DEA agents — only to stumble upon one of the largest drug operations on the East Coast.

A Dangerous Game of Crime and Consequences

Set in and around Sinking Spring, Pennsylvania, the series follows Ray (Brian Tyree Henry) and Manny (Wagner Moura), two lifelong friends from Philadelphia who run small-time scams. But their latest con — a staged DEA raid — leads them straight into a criminal empire far beyond their control. As their deception unravels, the duo faces ruthless drug lords, federal authorities, and a dangerous chain of events that could cost them everything.

A Star-Studded Cast & Creative Team

Dope Thief boasts an impressive cast, including Marin Ireland, Kate Mulgrew, Amir Arison, Ving Rhames, and Dustin Nguyen. The series is created by Peter Craig, known for his work on Top Gun: Maverick and The Batman. Adding to its prestige, legendary filmmaker Ridley Scott serves as an executive producer.

Why the Name Change?

Originally titled Sinking Spring, the show was later renamed Dope Thief to align more closely with the source material, Dennis Tafoya’s novel of the same name. Despite the title shift, the story and themes remain intact, exploring deception, loyalty, and survival in the criminal underworld.

The show’s setting, Sinking Spring, PA, is a real town located in Berks County. The name originates from a natural spring that appeared to “sink” into the ground, a fitting metaphor for the show’s themes of deception and hidden dangers.

When and Where to Watch

The first episode of Dope Thief premieres on Apple TV+ on March 14, 2025, with new episodes dropping weekly. As of now, the series is exclusive to Apple TV+, meaning fans hoping for a Netflix release may have to wait.

With a gripping premise, a stellar cast, and a creative team led by some of Hollywood’s finest, Dope Thief is shaping up to be one of 2025’s must-watch thrillers. If you love crime dramas with high stakes and unexpected twists, mark your calendars — this is one series you won’t want to miss.
