Bran’s Hunt Begins: The Untold Fate of Drogon after 'Game of Thrones'

Isaac Hempstead Wright

The dragon  might not have the best intentions.

Six years have passed since the Game of Thrones finale, but the fate of Drogon still captivates fans’ minds. The last Targaryen dragon made two iconic moves — he melted the symbol of power, the Iron Throne, and carried Daenerys’s body away to an unknown place, then vanished.

This open ending leaves room for theories: perhaps he flew to Valyria, the homeland of dragons, or is hiding somewhere in the shadows, waiting for a new rider. This could be key to the future of Westeros — because as long as the last dragon exists somewhere, the Targaryen story is not over.

Where Did Drogon Come From?

In House of the Dragon, there’s an interesting moment when Rhaenyra Targaryen, saving children from the civil war, sends them to Pentos with four dragon eggs — green, red, blue, and golden-beige. The darkest egg especially stands out, remarkably similar to the one from which Drogon later hatches.

Fans speculate that these eggs, after passing through traders and sorcerers, ended up in Essos centuries later. It’s quite possible that the dark egg eventually became Daenerys’s wedding gift.

Why Did Drogon Destroy the Iron Throne?

Drogon didn’t melt the Iron Throne just out of rage — this act seems to be a deliberate choice. The bond between the dragon and Daenerys went beyond mere obedience: he felt her emotions as his own. When Jon Snow killed Daenerys, Drogon didn’t seek revenge on him but turned his fury on the true "culprit" — the symbol of power that destroyed Dany.

Some fans go further, suggesting that the dragon sensed a threat from Bran. In the books, dragons are described as creatures with almost human intelligence. If the theory about the Three-Eyed Raven manipulating events holds true, destroying the throne looks like a pushback against his plans.

Where Did Drogon Fly Off To?

The latest news about Drogon came from Bran — the dragon was spotted near Volantis, but after that, the trail goes cold. Interestingly, the new king suddenly showed interest in finding him. It’s unclear why he needs the last Targaryen dragon. Perhaps Bran wants to protect the kingdom by controlling Drogon or fears that enemies might seize the dragon. But there’s a more disturbing theory — what if the Three-Eyed Raven is deliberately seeking Drogon to use him against the Wall?
