Beyond 'Terminator': 5 Cyborg Films That Conquered IMDb

Stills from the movies 'RoboCop' (1987) and 'The Terminator' (1984)

High ratings confirm their iconic status.

Cyborgs have always been a timeless theme in cinema. Mechanical bodies endowed with artificial intelligence ignite the imagination and provoke deep thoughts about humanity’s future. Today, we present a selection of five cyborg films with high IMDb ratings that are definitely worth watching to immerse yourself in this thrilling topic.

The Terminator (1984) — IMDb rating 8.1

It’s impossible to talk about cyborgs in cinema without mentioning The Terminator. This film became a cult classic and spawned an entire franchise that has remained a genre benchmark for decades. The story of killer machines sent back in time to alter the future is still breathtaking.

Notably, the first two Terminator films were shot before the widespread use of computer-generated effects, making them particularly impressive. Although the quality of later installments has been debated, the original two remain the gold standard for movies about steel assassins in human form.

The Terminator

Class of 1999 (1990) — IMDb rating 5.9

This film, popular in the '90s, now feels somewhat naive and even amusing. Class of 1999 was one of Hollywood’s last attempts to capitalize on the youth gang theme, which was highly relevant to America at the time. In the story, troubled schools hire teachers who turn out to be cyborgs created by a weapons corporation.

Today, Class of 1999 may only be of interest for nostalgic reasons or simply for ticking off a list. The special effects and acting feel dated, and the depiction of street criminals now brings a smile.

Surrogates (2009) — IMDb rating 6.3

A world where people use surrogate cyborgs to perform everyday tasks seems ideal. But when these surrogates — and their human operators — start being killed, Detective Tom Greer (Bruce Willis) is forced to investigate.

Surrogates 2009

Much like The Matrix, Surrogates raises questions about humanity’s future and the ethical limits of technological progress. This film isn’t just an action movie; it makes you think about what we lose when we replace reality with an artificial world.

A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001) — IMDb rating 7.2

This Steven Spielberg film strays far from the action genre. A.I. Artificial Intelligence is a touching story about a boy-cyborg named David, who dreams of becoming a real boy and earning the love of his adoptive parents.

In a distant future where robots have become commonplace, David is created as a replacement for a terminally ill child of a robotics company couple. When the real son recovers, David is no longer needed and embarks on a long and dangerous journey to find his place in the world. A.I. Artificial Intelligence is a film that brings not chills but tears, forcing the viewer to reflect on what it truly means to be human.

RoboCop (1987) — IMDb rating 7.6

This film rightfully earns its place among the most iconic cyborg movies. If The Terminator often portrayed the cyborg as an antagonist, RoboCop is undoubtedly a hero fighting for justice. The story of police officer Alex Murphy, killed by criminals and resurrected as a cyborg, captured audiences’ hearts so strongly that it spawned several sequels, a modern remake, and even two television series.

After a brutal death at the hands of gangsters, scientists reconstruct Murphy, replacing his damaged organs with titanium alloys and installing a concealed gun holster in his leg. Returning to duty, Sergeant Murphy — now bulletproof — wages an unrelenting war against crime, determined to find and punish his killers. The original RoboCop remains compelling even today, proving that true classics never age.
