When reality inspires horror, the fear becomes all too real. These films prove that truth is often scarier than fiction.
Horror films marked "based on true events" always draw attention. Directors take real-life frightening tales and enhance them with fictional details to amplify the effect. Here are four films inspired by real events and legends.
"The Exorcist" (1973)
This cult classic tells the story of 12-year-old Regan, whose behavior becomes horrifyingly erratic: she speaks in strange voices, objects fly around her, and people die. When doctors fail to explain her condition, the only solution is to turn to exorcism.
The story is based on real events. In the late 1940s, priests performed an exorcism on a boy named Roland Doe. Witnesses claimed the boy’s bed moved on its own and that he spoke in an inhuman voice. The film caused a sensation, won four Golden Globes, and remains one of the scariest horror movies in history.
"The Exorcism of Emily Rose" (2005)
This film portrays a priest accused of causing a young woman's death during an exorcism ritual. While doctors claimed her behavior was due to epilepsy and mental illness, her family believed she was possessed.
The real story occurred in 1976 and involved a young woman named Anneliese Michel. She suffered from epilepsy, but her parents and priests were convinced she was possessed by demons. After numerous exorcisms and a refusal of medical treatment, Anneliese died. Those involved were held accountable for her death.
"The Rite" (2011)
Starring Anthony Hopkins, this film follows a young priest losing his faith. He travels to the Vatican to study exorcism, where he encounters inexplicable evil.
The plot is based on Matt Baglio's book, which recounts the real-life experience of an American priest sent to Rome for exorcism training.
"Deliver Us from Evil" (2014)
A skeptical New York detective teams up with a priest to investigate mysterious crimes involving demonic forces.
The film is inspired by the memoirs of former police officer Ralph Sarchie. He documented his encounters with paranormal phenomena, claiming that his work repeatedly brought him face-to-face with demonic entities.
