Denzel Washington is officially entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with director Ryan Coogler confirming the news during a recent episode of 7 p.m. in Brooklyn, the podcast hosted by Carmelo Anthony. While playing a rapid-fire game about pop culture choices, Coogler lit up when asked about the actor’s involvement and casually revealed that Washington is on board for Black Panther 3.
Now 70, Washington is making his superhero debut — not for the spectacle, but for the storyteller. Coogler explained that he’s creating a role specifically for the legendary actor, underscoring that this isn’t just a guest appearance but a meaningful addition to the franchise.
He’ll join returning cast members Letitia Wright, Danai Jekesai Gurira, Lupita Nyong'o, and Winston Duke in the next chapter of Black Panther. The role of T’Challa will remain respectfully untouched following the passing of Chadwick Boseman, whose legacy continues to shape the series.

Though Washington recently mentioned he’s only taking on a handful of final roles, this one clearly stood out. When a director like Coogler writes something just for you — even after decades in the business — it might just be the right time to try something entirely new.
