The Emerald City isn’t done casting spells just yet. The brand-new trailer for Wicked: For Good, the second and final instalment in Jon M. Chu’s cinematic take on the Broadway sensation.
Oscar nominees Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo reprise their roles as Glinda and Elphaba, continuing the magical (and emotionally tangled) journey begun in last year’s first film — which, by the way, raked in nearly $750 million worldwide and earned ten Academy Award nominations, winning two. With For Good, Chu faces a theatrical challenge: the second act of the original stage musical is widely considered the weaker of the two. But if the trailer’s sweeping visuals and bolder tone are anything to go by, this finale may be more than just a spectacle.
In a significant shift from the source material, the sequel appears to give Dorothy a far larger role. Played by Irish actress Alisha Weir, the iconic girl from Kansas will no longer be a mere plot device, but a driving force within the story. The trailer hints at her interactions with the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion — familiar faces from a different tale — while teasing moments of wedding bells, airborne monkeys, and emotional reckonings that suggest deeper themes at play beneath the shimmer.
