After 'Monkey Man', Dev Patel Brings 14th-Century India to Life in New Action Epic

Dev Patel in 'Monkey Man'

In his next project, Patel takes on directing, writing, and starring once again.

Dev Patel is stepping back behind (and in front of) the camera for his second directorial venture, The Peasant — an ambitious period action-thriller produced by Fifth Season and Thunder Road Pictures. Following his 2023 debut, Monkey Man, Patel is once again wearing multiple hats: writing, directing, and leading the charge in what promises to be a bold reimagining of medieval storytelling.

Described as a revenge tale, The Peasant has been compared to a heady blend of Braveheart and John Wick, with stylistic echoes of King Arthur. Set in the 1300s, the story centres on a humble shepherd who sets out on a violent path of retribution against a ruthless band of mercenary knights that destroyed his village. Along the way, he uncovers a hidden identity and a past that is far more tangled than it first appears — because, naturally, it wouldn’t be a true epic without a few buried secrets.

Interestingly, The Peasant started life quite differently. Originally set against the backdrop of papal Italy, the screenplay first gained attention after being featured on the 2023 Black List, an annual celebration of Hollywood’s most admired unproduced scripts. Under Patel’s direction, however, the story has undergone a significant transformation, shifting from Europe to the vivid, complex world of feudal India — a bold move that hints at a rich and atmospheric visual style.

Producers are reportedly eyeing The Peasant as the beginning of a potential franchise, should audiences take to its mix of sword-swinging spectacle and deeply personal storytelling. Given Patel's track record for bringing intensity and heart to even the most chaotic narratives, this might just be one historical epic worth keeping an eye on.
