100% Fresh Two Seasons in a Row, Three Emmys, and Not a Single Word: This HBO Project Is a True Phenomenon

Stills from the series 'Primal'

There seems to be no equivalent to this animated series anywhere in the world.

In a world where TV shows increasingly rely on punchy lines, witty dialogue, and clever twists, the series Primal goes against the grain. This animated creation from Adult Swim and HBO Max is completely wordless — and yet it delivers an incredibly powerful story. For two seasons in a row, the show earned a 100% Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, received an 8.7 rating on IMDb, and won three Emmy Awards.

A Prehistoric World Where Words Aren’t Needed

Primal is a story of friendship and survival. The main characters — a caveman and a dinosaur, both of whom have lost their families — join forces in a brutal prehistoric world. There is no dialogue, only growls, screams, expressions, and powerful visual storytelling.

The series' creator, Genndy Tartakovsky, the mind behind the cult hits Samurai Jack and Dexter's Laboratory, has proven that it's possible to tell a deep, emotionally moving story without uttering a single word. And this isn't just a stylistic experiment — it's a fully realized art form.

Success Among Critics and Viewers

Despite what might seem like a niche format, Primal has become a true phenomenon. It’s praised for its expressive animation, masterful direction, and incredible atmosphere. For two seasons straight, the series earned 100% critical approval — an almost unheard-of achievement in the world of animation.

The project also received three Emmy Awards for outstanding achievement in animation, cementing its status as one of the most original and impactful animated series of the last decade.

If you haven’t yet seen Primal, now might be the time to discover a story that proves true emotion needs no words.
