James Cameron has big plans for Avatar 3: Fires and Ash, the third installment of his record-breaking franchise. In a recent interview with Empire Magazine, the acclaimed director revealed that the film might not align with what audiences expect — but he sees that as a good thing.
"We could be getting high on our own supply here, and everybody who looks at it [the new film] goes, '..., that’s not what I signed up for,'" Cameron admitted. Yet, he believes these creative risks are essential. "If you’re not making brave choices, you’re wasting everybody’s time and money."
Deeper Characters, Higher Stakes
Cameron promises Avatar 3 will deliver high-intensity action while pushing the series into new emotional and narrative territory.
"We’ve got some really clever action set-pieces," he said. "But what excites me is reaching a level of character and intrigue you haven’t seen before in an Avatar movie."
Ahead of the Curve
Unlike its predecessors, Fires and Ash is ahead of schedule.
"We’ve doubled the number of shots finished at this stage compared to [The Way of Water]," Cameron shared. "So that puts us well ahead of the curve, which is something I’ve never, frankly, experienced before."
A Returning Star
Kate Winslet will reprise her role as Ronal. Cameron revealed that Winslet trained with a 'husband and wife shaman practice' to master techniques that will play a key role in the new film.
"When you see her doing that purification ritual and some of the stuff in movie three, that’s based on actual practice," he explained.
A Franchise Like No Other
The Avatar franchise is no stranger to breaking records. The original 2009 film remains the highest-grossing movie of all time, earning $2.9 billion globally. Its sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, released in 2022, ranks third with $2.3 billion.
With its release date set for December 19, 2025, Avatar 3: Fires and Ash is poised to continue the franchise’s unparalleled legacy. As Cameron concludes, "You’ve got to break the mold every fricking time."
