'Interstellar' Never Says It, But Here’s Cooper’s Real Name

Matthew McConaughey

That’s just the character’s last name.

Christopher Nolan’s film Interstellar has earned a special place in the history of science fiction over the past decade. The story of pilot Cooper, who sets off in search of a new home for humanity, remains a topic of conversation among cinephiles to this day.

As always, Nolan paid particular attention to detail, and Interstellar was no exception. Even years later, fans continue to analyze hidden meanings and subtle nuances that make the film truly multifaceted.

Cooper’s Name

In Interstellar, the main character played by Matthew McConaughey is referred to exclusively by his last name — Cooper. This leads to an interesting moment in the film’s finale, when the character mistakenly assumes the space station is named after him, when in fact it honors his daughter, Murph.

Interstellar

The film itself never reveals the character’s first name aloud, but it appears in the official screenplay. From that, we learn that the character’s full name is Joseph A. Cooper.

Corn-Based Cuisine

In the early scenes of Interstellar, we see a world ravaged by ecological disaster — dust storms and a nitrogen-rich atmosphere have left corn as the only surviving crop. To create realistic shots of endless fields, the crew planted actual corn over 500 acres. Interestingly, Nolan consulted with Zack Snyder, who had done something similar while working on Man of Steel.

Moreover, all the food shown being eaten by Cooper’s family in the film — from pancakes to bread and syrup — is made entirely from corn. This carefully crafted detail emphasizes the scale of environmental collapse that ultimately pushes the hero to undertake his perilous space mission.
