'I’ll Never Forget': Glen Powell on Tom Cruise’s Electric Reaction to 'The Running Man'
A moment of cinematic brotherhood that sealed their action legacy.
Edgar Wright’s The Running Man adaptation is still months away, but for Glen Powell , one moment has already made the whole journey unforgettable. Speaking to SFX Magazine via GamesRadar+, Powell opened up about watching the film’s CinemaCon teaser alongside none other than his Top Gun: Maverick buddy and cinema legend, Tom Cruise.
And it turns out, Cruise’s reaction wasn’t just polite applause — it was pure, infectious excitement.
"Watching that teaser with Tom Cruise is a memory I will never forget," Powell said. "He was so stoked after watching it. What’s amazing about my relationship with Tom is that he never hides his excitement."
Interestingly, Before Glen Powell took on The Running Man, Arnold Schwarzenegger starred in the 1987 film adaptation. That version turned Stephen King’s satirical novel into a high-energy action movie, becoming a cult classic despite straying from the book. Now, Powell steps in for Edgar Wright’s new, sharper take on the deadly game.
The Running Man is a classic Stephen King story set in a dystopian near-future where a brutal televised game show forces contestants to fight for their lives. It’s a sharp, thrilling critique of media spectacle and societal violence, and Wright’s adaptation promises to bring fresh energy and style to this cult tale. Known for his kinetic direction and clever storytelling, Wright is perfectly suited to reimagine this action-packed thriller for a new generation.
