'I Was Crying': Val Kilmer Moved Tom Cruise to Tears During 'Top Gun: Maverick' Filming

Val Kilmer, the legendary actor has passed away at 65. While he had battled throat cancer for years, it was pneumonia — compounded by the weakened immune system from long-term medication —that ultimately took his life. Kilmer remained a fighter, much like the character he embodied, Iceman, showcasing the resilience of his Top Gun role.

Kilmer's breakthrough role came in Top Gun (1986), where he played the rival pilot Iceman, known for his calculated and cool-headed demeanor. His intense competition with Tom Cruise's Maverick helped create the dynamic that made the film so iconic. Despite their rivalry, Iceman and Maverick share a mutual respect that became one of the film's defining themes.

In Top Gun: Maverick (2022), Kilmer's reunion with Cruise was emotional for both. Cruise, who played Maverick, spoke in his memoir about the deep impact of seeing Kilmer return as Iceman, despite his health challenges.

"You're just looking at Iceman," Cruise recalled. "I was crying. I got emotional."

The reunion marked a poignant moment not just for the characters but for the actors themselves, reaffirming their long-standing friendship and Kilmer's enduring strength.

Kilmer's legacy as Iceman, both on and off-screen, will continue to inspire, showing the world what it means to fight through adversity.
