Created by showrunner and executive producer Clyde Phillips, Dexter: Original Sin is the first prequel series in the expanding franchise centred around serial killer Dexter Morgan. Michael C. Hall, who portrayed the titular antihero in the original series, serves as the narrator for this prequel. Patrick Gibson stars as a teenage Dexter, honing his murderous skills 15 years before the events of the original show.
Set in 1991 Miami, this 10-episode drama follows Dexter (Gibson) as he refines his abilities with guidance from his adoptive father Harry (Christian Slater). As his bloodthirsty urges intensify, Harry becomes Dexter's sole confidant, teaching him a code to identify and eliminate those who deserve to die while evading law enforcement — a challenge heightened by Dexter's internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.
The first season also features Molly Brown, Christina Milian, James Martinez, Alex Shimizu, and Reno Wilson, alongside guest stars Sarah Michelle Gellar and Patrick Dempsey.
The series premiered on 13 December, attracting 2.1 million global viewers within its first three days and becoming Showtime’s most-streamed series in a decade. By the finale on Valentine’s Day, viewership had increased by 27%, reaching 2.68 million global viewers.
Phillips is also working on Dexter: Resurrection, a continuation of Dexter: New Blood, set to premiere this summer. The franchise may soon expand further with a long-discussed limited series featuring the Trinity Killer, potentially narrated by John Lithgow.
